MGUC’s Community Garden’s First Harvest

As you sow, so shall you reap!

Can you believe it?  We have had our very first crop harvest at the Maple Grove United Church Community Garden.  Volunteers were there early on Sept 2, 2021 to pick the first crop of tomatoes at St Cuthbert’s and then moved to Maple Grove to harvest our first crop of greens – spinach, chard and kale.

The fresh produce was taken to FareShare Food bank that same afternoon and they were thrilled.

We received the following letter the very same day:

I am writing on behalf of the volunteers and clients of Fare Share Food Bank to thank you very much for your donation of fresh produce. Over the past few months, we have been challenged, as we found the price of groceries skyrocketed while the community need for our support rose. Fresh produce is particularly expensive and every effort is made to ensure our clients get healthy items in their food baskets. Therefore, donations such as this are very much appreciated.

As you probably know, Fare Share is operated entirely by approximately 60 volunteers, and we have been serving those in need for more than 30 years. This past year we provided, on average, for more than 430 families per month, a total of more than 1300 people; many of whom were children.

Thank you so much for caring for the less fortunate families in our community.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Russell

President

The greens are still growing and now we are urgently in need of waterers and weeders.  If you can spare 30 minutes once a week over the next few weeks that would be much appreciated.  Please call the church office or contact Sandra Kerr at shkerr@sympatico.ca  (phone 905 467-0918)  We provide lots of training and support !
