This spring, I am again taking part in Stride to Turn the Tide for the Grandmothers to Grandmothers (G2G) Campaign of the Stephen Lewis Foundation (SLF).
I joined SLF’s G2G Campaign 4 years ago, since retiring, and I have learned so much about the strength and determination of women, both in Africa and in my community.
I recently returned from Uganda and Tanzania, travelling with SLF and 10 other international grandmothers. We witnessed first hand the impact of SLF support to community-based organizations that are assisting African grandmothers (called Jaja in Uganda and Bibi in Tanzania) who are raising their grandchildren, orphaned by AIDS. Our fund-raising efforts over the past 10 years have actually made a difference .
I was honoured to participate in the first national gathering attended by 200 grandmothers in Tanzania. I talked with these women, I danced with these women,I shared food with these women, I held hands with these women and I marched with them. And I saw that they are becoming resilient and are indeed the pillars of their communities. I looked them in the eye and said that I would return to Canada and endeavour to raise more money to support initiatives that make their lives easier.
